KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 17, 2023) – Port KC, owner of the Berkley Riverfront development and the surrounding area, is excited to announce a strategic development agreement with the Kansas City Current to develop approximately 10 acres of land adjacent to Berkley Riverfront Park into a high-density, diverse and walkable neighborhood. This collaboration will bring office, retail, and housing options that complement already existing development, such as KC Current Stadium, the Origin Hotel, Bar K, and the Core and Union apartment complexes.
Parcels 3B, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10 are located between KC Current Stadium and the Origin Hotel and are generally bordered to the north by Berkley Riverfront Drive and south by Berkley Parkway. They will be developed in phases over 10 years. The proposed 2,000,000 square feet development will include office, retail, and approximately 1,000 multi-family residential units that will include 10% of those units at 50% AMI. The proposed project will reclaim what was previously an environmentally challenged dumping ground and connect a new diverse community to the surrounding neighborhoods. Once completed, residents, visitors and businesses will experience a completed riverfront neighborhood with walkable amenities.
Port KC and the Kansas City Current see Berkley Riverfront as a vibrant and active place to live and play with KC Current Stadium as an anchor and this development as a catalyst to bring even more multi-use development to the area.
Port KC created a master plan for developing the Riverfront more than 10 years ago and is excited to see those plans come to life. Port KC CEO Jon Stephens said, “Today is the latest milestone for Berkley Riverfront. A vision to see this once-forgotten and scarred piece of land turn into a vibrant blend of commerce, work, and recreation inviting to all. Now that dream, which has been years in the making, is coming to fruition. We have been very deliberate in our process to design and build this gem in the middle of Kansas City and we appreciate the partners who share our excitement about Berkley Riverfront’s future.”
The Riverfront expansion will see a beer garden added to the park with construction starting this fall, the KC Streetcar is scheduled to be operating by 2025 with a stop near the Origin Hotel, and a proposal for Parcel 9 is being considered, which would include more parking across from KC Current Stadium.
